Design makes a difference

Shout your name in the streets or whisper it in polite company. Clarify your position and explain your services. It all comes down to communication and that is what good design facilitates. Communication is more than words. It begins when your audience picks up your materials. Before they read one word, your piece is already communicating through layout, images, colors and font choices.

Why do you pick up one brochure in a rack of dozens? What is it about that ad that caused you to tear it out of the newspaper? Why did you pluck that unfamiliar product from the shelves? Design sets a tone and if that tone resonates with your audience they are more likely to pay attention to your message. This is where I come in.

Hello baby!

Baby Shower Invitation

This baby shower invitation provided some fun turning half-tone dots into patterns here. Had to put this one together quickly so started with vector art and customized it for the lovely mom-to-be.

A Lettered Tuesday Morning

Hand-drawn quoteI’ve never been accused of being an early bird. But when I heard the local chapter of AIGA was holding a Morning Blend discussion (7:15 a.m.!)  about hand-drawn type, I knew I had to set an early alarm. After discussing and admiring samples, we picked quotes and spent the morning doing some lettering. Nice way to make friends with my sketchbook again and was happy to do so in this welcoming group. I do sketch at work, mostly in margins and post-it notes, but by and far I tweak my type on a computer screen. I’ll definitely be doing more hand-drawn type. I’ve attached my roughs from this early and rainy morning. Now if I can figure out the exposure times on my home screen print set-up I might have to combine these two arts.

About Me

I love graphic design and can’t imagine doing anything else. I spent my formative years creating collage catalogs and competing with a classmate named Erin for the distinction of class artist. In math class I would personify my numbers by drawing arms and legs onto them and backgrounds for them to live in. My “number people” had flowers in the yard and stairs to climb up to the next equation. These formative years haven’t ended. These days this takes the form of keeping up with the rapidly evolving world of web design while maintaining my sanity. Most days this goes pretty well. My interests, in addition to graphic and web design of course, include lifelong learning, whimsy, dancing, hot springs, traveling and topographic maps in vector format.
